The Keeping of Haven Creek

Montana Territory, 1887. Three years ago Caleb Morgan filed a claim on a creek in the Crazy Mountain foothills and married a runaway from Philadelphia. They have a cabin now. A daughter. A barn he built bigger than he could justify, and a second child due in the spring. It is the best year of their lives.

The summer runs dry. The grass comes up short. And in November, the snow begins.

What comes down on the Shields Valley that winter will end the open range in Montana. Every family in it will be measured by what they stored, what they built, and who they were willing to listen to — and some of them will not be there when the thaw comes.

Cal thinks the danger is the cold, and the cattle, and the men waiting to buy whatever the cold leaves behind. He is wrong about where the worst of it will happen.

The Author

H.R. Ludwig

H.R. Ludwig has always been a storyteller first. Long before there was a book, there were stories told across the dinner table, on long drives, in the margins of ordinary evenings — for an audience of one: his wife, a lifelong bibliophile with a personal library most authors would envy. It was for her, and her alone, that he started telling this one.

What began as a private research obsession into Montana Territory in the late 1800s — the homesteaders, the land, the people who built lives from nothing in the shadow of the Crazy Mountains — grew into a full historical romance saga he never intended anyone else to hear.

The Claiming of Haven Creek is the second story he’s told for her, and the first she insisted was good enough to share with the world.

He lives with his wife in California, where he’s already deep into the next chapter of the Haven Creek Saga.
